Cinnamon Bark/ Cortex Cinnamomi/ Rou gui

[Abstruct] It is dried bark of cinnamomum cassia presl, family Lauraceae. It is  most ly peeled off and collected in autumn. Impurity and rough bark are removed off and dried in the shade. It is cut into pieces or ground into powder and the raw form is used.
[Medicinal Properties] The bark is pungent and sweet in flavour, and not in nature. It acts on the heart, spleen, liver and kidney channels. As a pungent, sweet, extremely hot and pure Yang herb, Chinese cassia bark in similar to but slightly weaker than prepared aconite root in supplementing fire and dispersing cold. However, the bark has a mild and lasting effect, and can conduct the fire back to its origin. Therefore, it is often used to treat Yang-deficiency of the spleen and kidney, decline of the fire from the gate of life, pains due to cold, and Yang being expelled externally by Yin-excess in the interior, and other syndromes.
[Medicinal Efficacies] Reinforce fire and strengthen Yang; Return fire to its origin; disperse cold to alleviate pain; warm meridians and unblock collaterals.
[Modern Medical Functions]
1. The ingredient cinnamaldehyde posseses antipyretic effect; promote sweating, diluting blood vessel of the skin. (if decoction is used when warm).
2. Anti-spasm, relieves pain; inhibits CNS.
3. Inhibit the induced ulcers of laboratory rats; promotes bile secretion.
4. Antibiotic effect.
5. Lowers blood sugar. (methylhydroxy chalcone polymer ).
6. Promote urination (if decoction is used when cooled.).
7. Blood thinning effect.
[Actions and Indications]
1. Tonic for stomach, rid of wind, to promote sweating, for headache, anemia,

[Clinical Applications]
1. Syndrome of kidney yang deficiency: It is good at warmly tonifying Mingmen, and is the
essential medicinal herb to treat kidney yang deficiency syndrome, manifesting as impotence, 
frequent micturition, soreness and coldness of loins and knees, it is usually used in combination with Fuzi, Shanzhuyu, Shudihuang, such as in the formula Gui Fu Baiwei Pill; In the treating for diarrhea, abdominal pain due to yang deficiency of spleen and kidney, it is used together with Fuzi, Ganjiang, Baizhu, such as in the formula Gui Fu Lizhong Pill.

2. Deficiency and coldness of Lower Energizer, and up-floating of deficiency yang: For syndrome of deficiency and coldness of kidney yang, and up-floating of deficiency yang, manifesting as upper heat and lower cold, it is often used in combination with Shanzhuyu, Wuweizi, Renshen, Muli, so as to reture fire to its source.
3. All pain syndromes due to accumulation of cold and stasis of the blood: In treating for cold pain in epigastric abdomen, it can be used alone for oral use or local applications in umbilicus, or together with Ganjiang, Dingxiang, Wuzhuyu; for Bi-syndrome with cold-dampness, lumbago, it is usually used with Sangjishegn, Duhuo, Duzhong, such as in the formula Duhuo Jisheng Decoction; or angina pectoris of chest imprdiment, it is often used together with Fuzi, Guizhi, Xiebai; for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea due to cold stagnation, it is often used together with Danggui, Chuanxiong, Aiye, such as in the formula Shaofu Zhuyu Decoction; for colic of coldness with abdominal pain, it is usually used in combination with Wuzhuyu, Xiaohuixiang.
4. Yin-abscess, carbuncle and sore that without being healed before suppuration or after rupture for a long time: In treating for swollen yin-abscess due to deficient-cold of qi and blood, it is usually used in combination with Lujiaojiao, Shudihuang, Baijiezi, such as in the formula Yanghe Decoction; in treating for carbuncle and sore without beingbeing healed before suppuration or after rupture for a long time, it can be used together with Huangqi, Danggui, such as in the formula Tuoli Huangqi Decoction.
In addition, it can warm up yang qi, invigorate the development of qi and blood, therefore, it is often used with medicinals that tonifying qi and blood, indicated for the syndrome of deficiency of qi and blood after prolong chronic disease.

[Usage and Dosage] Raw herbs 1-4.5g, The medicine is suitable to be decocted later, after being ground into powder, it is taken after mixing with water, or in pills and powders, 1-2g every time.
[Toxicity and Cautions]
Not to use in case of liver yang ascending, warm-febrile diseases, yinxu with heat, heat in blood with vomiting. Use caution during pregnancy or excessive bleeding, during menses. Over dosage  may be toxic to the kidney and may cause bleeding, in the urinary tract.Over cooking may lessen the effectiveness because of the evaporating oil which is part of the effective ingredients. Cinnamaldehyde (cinnamic aldehyde), a main ingredient of cassia oil, is the toxic ingredient.
Gui zhi is from the young branches of cinnamon trees.
Rou gui is the thick bark of the trees.
Usually rou gui is used in tonic while gui zhi is used for expelling wind and dampness but they can be used interchangeably.
[Medicinal Comparison]
Similarities: Fuzi and Rougui are all extermely hot in nature, and have the same function of reinforcing fire and strengthening Yang, dispersing cold to alleviate pain, they are usually indicated for interior cold syndrome and Bi-syndrome.
Differences: But Fuzi is good at restoring Yin from collapse, and warmly tonifying spleen and kidney. Rougui is good at warmly tonigying Mingmen, returning fire to its origin, invigorating the development of qi and blood, therefore, it is often used in treating for syndrome of deficiency and coldness of kidney yang, and up-floating of deficiency yang, and deficiency of qi and blood after
prolonged chronic disease.
