Inula Flower/ Flos Inulae/ Xuan fu hua
[Abstruct] It is the dried capitulum of Inula Japonica Thunb. Or Inula Britannica L., family Compositae. They are collected in summer and autumn when the buds are pen. They are dried in shade or in the sunshine after the impurities are removed. The raw or those stirbaked with honey are use as medicine.
[Medicinal Properties] It is bitter, acrid, salty in flavour and slightly warm in nature. It acts on the lung, stomach and large intestine channels. Its bitterness can lower the upward adverse flow of the lung or the stomach-qi; acridness can resolve phlegm; saltiness and warmness can soften and remove blockage. It has effects of lowering the stomach-qi, clearing phlegm and remove blockage. It has effects of lowering the stomach-qi, clearing phlegm and relieving asthma, congestion, and vomiting. It is indicated in stagnation of phlegm, cough and asthma with abundant sputum, or stagnation of phlegm-dampness in middle-jiao, congestion at the right hypochondrium, vomiting and other syndromes.
[Medicinal Efficacies] Direct qi downward and resolve phlegm; suppress adverse rise of qi and relieve vomiting.

[Actions & Indications] Being used in wind cold type of cough, phlegm stagnation, fullness in chest, asthmatic cough with abundance of phlegm, vomiting, burping, lumps under the chest.
[Clinical Applications]
1. Phlegm-fluid congestion in lung causing and dyspnea with profuse sputum, phlegm-fluid retention causing oppression in chest and hypochondrium: For cough and dyspea due cold phlegm accompanied by exterior syndrome, it is usually combined with sheng jiang, Banxia and Xixin in Jinfeicao Powder. For excess syndrome of phlegm-heat manifested as cough and dyspnea, it is used with Jiegeng, Sangbaipi and Dahuang in Xuanfuhua Decoction. For stubborn phlegm accumulation resulting in stuffiness and oppression in chest and hypochondrium, it is combined with Haifushi and Haigeqiao.
2. Belching, vomiting: For qi deficiency of stomach and spleen and adverse ascent of phlegm-dapm causing vomiting, belching and epigastric stuffiness and oppression, it is combined with Daizheshi, Banxia and Shengjiang in Xuanfu Daizhe Decoction.
[Usage and Dosage] 3-10g, It is wrapped to be decocted.
[Toxicity & Cautions] Not to use in yinxu (yin deficient) with chronic cough, dry cough with wind heat type syndrome.
[Annotation]
Jin fei cao ???: It has the same souce with Xuanfuhua, but only the part of the plant above the earth is used, so also named as Xuanfugeng. It has similar medicinal propertied and functions and it is very effective for dispersing. It mainly treats external contraction manifested as cough with profuse sputum. 5-10g is decocted for oral administration. The fresh leaves can be pround into juice and applied externally to cure sores and swelling.

[Directions]
Every sachet(1.1g) is equivalent to raw herb 10 grams.
The dosage is for adults, one sachet each time, twice a day. Please put the granule into a cup, then put 50-100ml boiling water into the cup and stir it with spoon. You will get some tea, drink it when it is luke-warm. For children, the dosage should be reduced according to the weight.
