Rhizome or root of notopterygium/ Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii/ Qiang huo

[Abstruct] Qianghuo is the dried rhizome and root of Notopterygium incisum Ting es H.T. Chang or Notopterygium forbesii Boiss., pertaining to Apiaceae. It is collected in spring and fall. After the fibrous root, earth and sand are removed, it is sun dried, and then cut into slices. The raw form is used.

[Medicinal Properties] Pungent, bitter and warm; relate to bladder and kidney meridians.

[Medicinal Efficacies] Dispel cold, release superficies; dispel wind-damp and stop pain.

[Clinical Applications]
1. External contraction of wind-cold
It treats external contraction of wind-cold with dampness, which manifests as a version to cold, fever, no sweat on the skin surface, headache, spasm of nape, severe aching pain of body, in combination with Fangfeng, Xixin, and Chuanxiong; for example in Jiuwei Qinghuo Decoction. Also it treats external contraction of wind-damp, manifesting as headache and painful stiff nape, aching and heavy sensation in the back and lumbar, or pain of the whole body, in combination with Duhuo, Haoben and Fangfeng; for example in Qianghuo Shengshi Decoction.

2. Althralgia due to wind-cold-damp, and pain in shoulders and back It is good at treating althralgia due to wind-cold-damp of upper body, manifesting as joint pain in shoulders and back, in combination with Fangfeng, Jianghuang and Danggui; for example in Juanbi Decoction.

[Usage and Dosage] Raw herb 3-9g.

[Toxicity and Cautions]
Be cautious with yin-blood deficiency. Over dosage can lead to vomiting. As a result, avoid with weakness of spleen and stomach.
