Centipede/ Scolopendra/ Wu gong

[Abstruct]
Wogong is the dried body of scolopendra subspinipes mutilans L.Koch, pertaining to scolopendridae. It is collected it in spring and summer. By inserting bamboo strip into its head and tail, it is straight tightened, and then dried.
[Medicinal Properties]
Pungent in flavour, warm in nature, it acts on liver channel, has the effects of checking endogenous wind to relieve convulsion and clearing obstruction in the channels to relieve pain. The effect are similar to that of scorpion but stronger, so it is indicated in syndromes of acute chronic infantile convulsion and headache, and also for scrofula and furuncles and carbuncles to resolve the masses.

Extinguish wind, relieve spasms; relieve toxicity, dissipate nodulations; unblock collaterals, and stop pain.

[Actions and Indications]
It is used for epilepsy, spasm, scrofula, sores, arthritis, hemorrhoid with pain, snake poison, scalding, leukemia, stroke.
[Clinical Applications]
1. Spasms and convulsions: Wugong is the most essential medicinal to extinguish wind. It treats spasms ans convulsions due to various causes. Wogong and Quanxie are used together to create mutual reinforcement; for example in Zhijing Power. It treats infantile clenched mouth, spasms of hands and feet, in combination with Quanxie and Gouteng. For infantile acute convulsions, it is in combination with Dansha and Qingfen. It treats tetanus in combination with Tiannanxing and Fangfeng.
2. Sores, ulcers, swelling, toxin, scrofula, bites by poisonous snakes: It is is indicated for abscesses, swelling and toxin, in combination with Xionghuang and Zhudanzhi, for external application, such as in Buer Powder. For scrofula and ulceration, it is in combination with tea, ground into fine powder for external application. It treats bites by poisonous snake, in combination with Huanglian and Dahuang.
3. Chronic arthralgia: It treats arthralgia, manifesting as severe wandering pain, in combination with Quanxie and Fangfeng.
4. Refractory headache: It treats refractory headache and migraine, in combination with Tianma and Chuanxiong.
[Usage and Dosage]
Raw herb 3-5g/time. It is ground into powder for oral administration, 0.6-1g. Also it is used externally.
[Toxicity and Cautions]
Over dosage can cause nausea, vomiting, abdomen pain with diarrhea, lack of energy, sclera icteric, lack of consciousness, slow heart rate, and shock. Large dosage can cause cardic paralysis, respiratory paralysis and death.
Treatment method can include treating the symptoms. Bites by Centiped can be treatment with suction cup to suck out the toxin and apply 3% ammonia solution or 5% sodium hydrocarbonate solution.
