Cinnamom Twig/ Ramulus Cinnamomi/ Gui zhi
[Abstruct] Guizhi is the dried tender twig of cinnamomum cassia presl, pertaining to Luraceae. It is collected in spring and summer. After the leaf is removed, it is cut into slices and then sun dried. The raw form is used.
[Medicinal Properties] Gui zhi is pungent and sweet in flavour, warm in nature and acting on heart, lung and urinary bladder channels. Pungent and warm for dispersion and sweet for mild potency, without the shortcomings of hyperhidrosis damaging Yang, the herb is often used to treat exterior syndromes of both deficiency and excess types caused by pathogenic wind-cold. In addition, the herb can warm blood, invigorate pulse, reinforce Yang and promote Qi flow. It is an important herb to treat pains due to cold, deficiency of Yang and water retention.
[Medicinal Efficacies] Induce sweating, release muscles; warm lung, unblock meridians; reinforce yang, promote qi transformation; lower down reversed qi flow.
[Modern Medical Functions]
1. The ingredient cinnamaldehyde posseses antipyretic effect; promote sweating, diluting blood vessel of the skin. (if decoction is used when warm).

2. Anti-spasm, relieves pain; inhibits CNS.
3. Inhibit the induced ulcers of laboratory rats; promotes bile secretion.
4. Antibiotic effect.
5. Lowers blood sugar. (methylhydroxy chalcone polymer )
6. Promote urination (if decoction is used when cooled.)
[Actions & Indications]
1. Tonic for stomach, rid of wind, to promote sweating, for headache, anemia,cold limbs, to promote urination.
2. To promote lung qi, in chill and fever, cold phlegm, diarrhea, muscle spasm, headache, back pain, sweating, to stop easily being annoyed, to strengthen muscles and bones, promote circulation.
3. Be used in impotence due to shenyangxu (kidney yang deficient).
[Clinical Applications]
1. Exterior syndrome of wind-cold: Guizhi treats both exterior excess and exterior deficiency syndrome. In combination with Mahuang; for example in Mahuang Decoction, it treats no sweat in exterior excess. In combination with Baishao; for example in Guizhi Decoction, it treats sweat in exterior deficiency.

2. Wind-cold-damp arthralgia, shoulder and back pain: It is in combination with Fuzi; for example in Fuzi Guizhi Decoction.
3. Chest impediment, heart pain, amenorrhea, dysmenorrheal: It treats chest impediment and heart pain due to weakness of chest of yang, and heart vessel obstruction, in combination with Zhishi and Xiebai; for example in Zhishi Xiebai Guizhi Decoction. It is indicated for deficiency-cold in middle energizer, cold pain in stomach and abdomen in combination with Baishao and Yitang; for example in Xiaojianzhong Decoction. In case of menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, dysmenorrheal and postpartum abdominal pain, due to congealing cold with blood stasis, it is in combination with Danggui and Wuzhuyu; for example in Wenjing Decoction.
4. Phlegm-fluid retention and water retention: it treats dizziness, palpitation, and cough due to phlegm-fluid retention, in combination with Fuling and Baizhu; for example In Linggui Zhugan Decoction. Also it treats disturbance of qi transformation in bladder, which manifests as edema and dysuria, in combination with Fuling, Zhuling and Zexie; for example in Wuling Powder.
5. Palpitation and up-rushing of qi: It is indicated for palpation, knotted and intermittent pulse, due to weakness of heart yang, in combination with Gancao, Renshen and Maidong; for example in Zhigancao Decoction. For up-rushing of qi due to prosperous of yin cold, leading to running qi, attacking heart and chest, use it of large dosage; for example in Guizhi Jiagui Decoction.
[Usage and Dosage]  Raw herb 3-10g/time.
[Toxicity & Cautions]
1. Not to use in case of liver yang ascending, warm-febrile diseases, yinxu with heat, heat in blood with vomiting. Use caution during pregnancy or excessive bleeding during menses. Over dosage may be toxic to the kidney and may cause bleeding in the urinary tract.

2. Over cooking may lessen the effectiveness because of the evaporating oil which is part of the effective ingredients.
3. Cinnamaldehyde (cinnamic aldehyde), a main ingredient of cassia oil, is the toxic ingredient.
4. Patients with Yin deficiency and excessive fire should be prohibited to use this herb, and women in pregnancy or with excessive menstruation use it cautiously!
Gui zhi
is from the young branches of cinnamon trees.

Rou gui is the thick bark of the trees.Usually rou gui is used in tonic while gui zhi is used for expelling wind and dampness but they can be used interchangeably.

Every sachet 0.3 is equivalent to raw herb 6 grams.

The dosage is for adults, one sachet each time, twice a day. Recommend 60 sachets for one treatment. Please put the granule into a cup, then put 50-100ml boiling water into the cup and stir it with spoon. You will get some tea, drink it when it is luke-warm. For children, the dosage should be reduced according to the weight.
