Fresh Ginger/ Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens/ Sheng jiang/ Gan jiang
Shengjiang is the fresh rhizome of zingiber officinale Rosc., pertaining to Zingiberaceae. It is collected in fall and winter. After the fibrous root , earth and sands are removed, it is cut into thin slices. The raw form is used.

[Medicinal Properties]
Ginger is pungent in flavour, slightly warm in nature and acts on the lung, spleen and stomach channels. Pungent and warm for dispersion and slightly warm for mild effect, with its work power of dispelling exopathogens, the herb is indicated for slight syndrome of wind-cold type of common cold or used as an auxiliary. With its strong power of arresting vomiting, know as a holy drug for vomiting, it is used in proper compatibility with other herbs to treat many kinds of vomiting.

The ingredient, gingerol, possesses the effect of: anti peptic ulcer, promoting flowing of bile, protecting  liver, cardiac stimulation, inhibiting platelet coagulation, preventing dizziness, anti-tumor, inhibiting CNS, improving auto-immune function, antibiotic (especially Salmonella), killing parasites, anti-inflammation, and anti-oxident, anti bacteria  and anti-trichomoniasis.
[Actions & Indications]
Sheng jiang means fresh ginger: Evaporates the exterior and rids of coldness, warms the middle burner (jiao) and alleviates stuffy nose, pain of intestine hernia, vomiting, stops coughing with chronic lung disorders with phlegm, reduces the toxicity of other herbs (like fu zi, ban xia). For sweaty feet, frost bite, sore mouth and tongue, body odor from armpits, itchiness, for preventing sea sickness.

Gan jiang means dry ginger. Gan jiang is mainly used in warming the middle, purge coldness, correct yangxu condition which is to improve circulation, rid of  cold and pain of chest and of abdomen, lower back pain and chronic diarrhea.
Pao jiang (hei jiang) means baked ginger. It is for warming the digestive system, getting rid of heat due to deficiency, for cold pain of chest and abdomen, flatulence, diarrhea. dysentry, stop bleeding, rid of clot blood, vomiting blood, diarrhea with blood, excessive bleeding during premenopausal stage.
Sheng jiang pi means fresh ginger peels: It is acrid, cool, being used in edema, difficulty in urination; taken as decoction.
[Modern Research]
Effect on E. coli:  an active ingredient of ginger can significantly blocked the binding of enterotoxin to cell-surface receptor G M1, resulting in the inhibition of fluid accumulation in the closed ileal loops of mice.[1]

[Clinical Applications]
1. Exterior contraction of wind- cold: By itself or in combination with brown sugar and Congbai (fistular onion stalk), Shengjiang treats mild cold due to wind-cold. In Chinese daily life, Shengjiang is used to treat light syndrome of wind-cold type of common cold, ginger can be used with sugar to make a decoction for oral taking when the decoction remains hot, or it is used as an auxiliary to strengthen the dispersing power of other diaphoretics pungent in flavor and warm in nature.

2. Stomach cold and vomiting: It is known as the saint medicine for vomiting, for it is good at treating vomiting due to stomach cold. In combination with other medicine, it can treat various vomiting. For vomiting due to stomach, it is combination with Banxia, such as in Xiaobanxia Decoction. For that due to stomach heat, it is in combination with Huanglian and Zhuru.
3. Lung cold and cough: It is good at treating wind-cold invasion of lung, manifesting as profuse phlegm, cough, aversion to cold and headache, in combination with Mahuang and Xinren
Also it can remove toxin of raw Banxia, raw Nanxing, fish and crab.
[Usage and Dosage] Raw herb 3-10g/time. Sliced for decoction, or pounded for juice to make infusion with hot boiled water.
[Toxicity & Cautions] Do not use in case of yinxu (yin deficient) or in stomach heat with vomiting.
1.Sheng jiang pi
: shengjiangpi is the peel of shengjiang. Its property is pungent and cold. It can harmonize spleen and promote water, to treat edema and dysuria. Dosage 3-10g

2. Sheng jiang zhi: The juice made by pounding from shengjiang is known as Shengjiangzhi. It is similar to shengjiang in efficacies, but good at resolving phlegm and arresting vomiting. It can treat numbness, swelling and pain of tongue due to intoxication by Tiannanxing and Banxia, or severe vomiting and failing to eat, as well as acute syncope due to wind stroke. Dosage 3-1g.

The dosage is for adults, one sachet each time, twice a day. Recommend 60 sachets for one treatment. Please put the granule into a cup, then put 50-100ml boiling water into the cup and stir it with spoon. You will get some tea, drink it when it is luke-warm. For children, the dosage should be reduced according to the weight.
